Inspired by “Narrative Economics” course showing the power of story perception over big trends, tried to play with some replication.
Many examples in the original course were based on N-gram viewer - quite a curious tool, in a way similar to Google Trends, but with a much longer history and more explainable.
So for the ultimate replication, one needs a raw data source.
I’ve picked Hackernews comment section to play and as it was already in BigQuery, the quickest way to PoC was through one query. That version looks at single words/tokens only for now.

Simple comparison (some quick Tableau) shows preciselywhen did the “Tensorflow” became less relevant than “Pytorch” and how more of a super-trend AI narrative is discussion-wise even in comparison with Covid and Bitcoin.
